Personal Social Health Education at Christ Church and Holy Trinity Primary School
Intent
Our intention is that when children leave, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that they will need to overcome issue and be able to bounce back. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.
Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
Impact
By the time our children leave our school they will:
- be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
- be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
- appreciate difference and diversity
- recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty
- be able to understand and manage their emotions
- be able to look after their mental health and well-being
- be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future
- understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level
- have respect for themselves and others
- have a positive self esteem
Implementation
PSHE at CCHT is designed and delivered by teachers to meet their pupils’ and community’s needs.
- This has included early consultation with parents and community leaders, and teaching which is in line with the Christian ethos of the school, while ensuring that lessons reflect a range of religious, cultural and other perspectives.
- Taught by teachers who have had training in the subject: this means ensuring the subject is a key part of all initial teacher education routes and that there are high-quality CPD opportunities available for existing teachers through our RSE/PSHE consultant
- Taught in regular timetabled lessons: providing an opportunity for developmental learning, with clear cross-curricular links made with other subjects as part of a curriculum planned by the school.
- Curriculum content is determined by schools using best practice guidance, local data and assessment of pupil need in consultation with pupils, parents and community leaders. This localised approach, based on pupil need, parental consultation and the professional judgement of schools, is preferable to a rigid curriculum set nationally
- Balanced, factually-accurate and appropriate lessons: learning in PSHE education should be balanced, factually accurate, always cover the law and a range of views and beliefs on a given issue, while being appropriate to the age and maturity of the pupils and respectful of their religious and cultural backgrounds.
- PSHE education could be supported by enhanced statutory guidance for schools relating to parental involvement through good communication of subject taught
Curriculum Overview
The Curriulum has been taken from the PSHE Association Programme of Study. The Programme of Study sets out learning opportunities for each key stage, in three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. It incorporates:
- a long term plan for the year across all year groups
- separate grids for each year group, setting out learning objectives for each half-term
- links to resources (both PSHE Association resources and resources carrying the Association’s Quality Mark*)
- We teach our PSHE through question based topics; What? and ‘Who?’’ questions and build throughout Key Stage 2 into ‘Why?’ and ‘How?’ questions
- We base mould our curriculum to the children’s needs and local issues we might perhaps need to spend more time on a particular topic area, or bring content forward if your pupils need it
